WEEK 10 - Day 37 Dismantling Floorboards of Stove House 5

Work started today to dismantle the floorboards of Stove House 5. The boards are being lifted for replacement whn the building is rebuilt on new foundations in Phase 2. Following the removal of the boards the floor joists will be taken out and the outer walls will then be taken down brick by brick. There are over 400 boards to lift before lunchtime tomorrow.

Also posted today a movie prepared by APR Services to show the coverage obtained during their laserscan survey of the Stove House areas of SH 2,3, 4 and 5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmRBwrhPs30m/watch?v=bmRBwrhPs30

  1. How is a laserscan survey movie made? ... big question I guess!

  2. Laserscans use a beam of light to record the distance from the laser source to the target by the time the light beam takes to go to the object and be reflected back. The machine collects the return light and stores in its memory where the reflection came from. There are thousands of 'points' within each scene. THe source is moved around the object to pick up comple surfaces. Control survey points allow the computer to lock different scenes creating whole objects or landscapes which can be manipulated and be seen from any angle or view point. A 'camera' can then be 'flown' through the 'point cloud' data stored in the computer to give the impression of being physically within the scene. THe appearance of solid surfaces is created by the density of the 'points' collected during the survey, it also allows you to pass through solid looking structures, such as when the movie passes through the wall of Stove House 5 from the Loading Bay area. There are lots of fascinating laserscan images appearing on Youtube, have a search for other examples. Some have more detailed explanations than I have given here.
